ST. PAUL, Minn. – In a game in which just one goal was scored, the Northwestern College women's soccer team generated a strong offensive force that led to a 1-0 win over North Central University, earning them a weekend record of 2-0 against the Rams.
The Eagles controlled the rhythm of the game by posting 21 shots in comparison to the visitors' two. All but four of those shots were on goal, as NWC was pesky on offense and continued pressuring the North Central back line for the entirety of the contest.
After a first half that included nine Northwestern shots, the two teams headed into halftime tied in a 0-0 duel that lasted well into the second half. The Purple and Gold's one goal was a memorable one, as
Susan Delain (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) laid the ball up for a
Lauren Cleope (Manila, Philippines/Faith Academy) header into the back of the net for what ended up being the game-winning goal at the 75:09 mark.
In addition to their advantage in shots, the Eagles also tallied 10 corner kicks as opposed to the Rams' zero. The home team's backline kept the ball from traveling too far into the backfield, while
Emily Johnson (Esko, Minn./Esko) picked up North Central's lone shot on goal. With the win, Johnson earned her fourth victory and third shutout of the 2012 campaign.
Next up for Northwestern (6-5-0 overall, 6-2 UMAC) is a trip north to Northland College in Ashland, Wis. for a matchup with the Lumberjills next Thursday, October 11. Earlier this season, NWC earned a win over Northland after notching two first-half goals en route to a home victory.
