Bethany Lutheran scoring run defeats Women's Soccer

Box Score

ST. PAUL – After leading early, the Northwestern College women's soccer team gave up two goals within five minutes to drop a 2-1 game to Bethany Lutheran College on Friday afternoon at Reynolds Field. The Eagles outshot the visitors 23-14, including 16-10 on goal but were only able to put one point on the scoreboard in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) contest.

NWC set the offensive tempo early as it tallied seven shots before Jessica Monson (Albertville, Minn./Home School) headed a Lyssa Hester (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville) corner kick past the Bethany Lutheran goalkeeper at the 23:03 mark of the first half, giving the home team a 1-0 advantage. Friday's goal marked the second straight game that Hester has earned an assist off a corner kick situation.

The Purple and Gold's lead was short lived as the Vikings notched their own goal following a corner kick situation tying the game at 1-1. Bethany Lutheran struck again 4:07 later and found the back of the Eagles' net again, securing a one-goal advantage that would last until the end of regulation.

Emily Johnson (Esko, Minn./Esko) fended off six opponent shots on goal on NWC's end of the field as part of a defensive effort that tallied eight total saves throughout the afternoon.

Northwestern (now 6-8-1, 6-4-0 UMAC) will look to return to winning ways on Saturday when it takes the turf at Mounds View High School to face Martin Luther College in a 2:30 p.m. game.
