ST. PAUL – An early goal by the visiting team created a deficit that the Northwestern College soccer team was unable to recover from Monday afternoon at Reynolds Field. The Eagles dropped the 2-1 contest to Jamestown College in a game that featured similar statistical performances from each team.
The visitors from North Dakota made their presence felt early as they posted a header shot just 36 seconds after the competition began. At the 2:25 mark, the Jimmies were already on the board, gaining an advantage that would remain until the final whistle.
Jamestown scored again with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half, doubling its lead as the teams headed into intermission.
The second period saw an improvement in Northwestern offense as the Eagles earned a 12-7 advantage in shots in the last 45 minutes of play. The home team cut into the Jimmies' lead soon after play resumed when a breakaway situation left
Lindsay Halvorson (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) with a wide open net. Halvorson placed the ball between the pipes and notched her fourth goal of the year, while
Sarah Gerten (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian) was credited for her first career assist on the same play.
NWC kept battling for scoring opportunities but was unable to execute and ended the game down one goal.
The Purple and Gold tallied 20 shots in comparison to Jamestown's 17, but the visitors outshot the Eagles 13-11 on goal. The similarities continued on defense, as the goalkeepers from each team picked up eight saves in the contest.
Northwestern now owns a 6-7-1 overall record heading into an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference-filled weekend with home matchups against Bethany Lutheran College and Martin Luther College this Friday and Saturday (October 19 and 20). Live stats and video will be available for Friday's 3:30 p.m. game at Reynolds Field.
On Saturday, the NWC will host Martin Luther in a 2:30 p.m. home contest taking place at Mounds View High School in nearby Arden Hills, Minn.
