Northwestern unable to match Saints' offense in 3-1 loss

Box Score

ST. PAUL – The Northwestern College women's soccer team was unable to overcome an early deficit in Saturday's loss to the College of St. Scholastica, dropping the game in a 3-1 fashion.

The Saints got on the board early after a deflection off an Eagle defender put the visiting team up 1-0 in the fourth minute of play, an advantage NWC was unable to recover. The home team withheld eight more shots from St. Scholastica before the end of the half in a strong defensive effort that saw four Sarah Stenson (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) saves.

The Saints scored again 4:10 into the second period, but Northwestern fought back 13 minutes later as Sarah Scinto (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) netted a goal of her own, courtesy of a Lyssa Hester (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville) corner kick. The next 26 minutes featured changes of possessions as both teams battled for scoring opportunities, with the final goal being scored by St. Scholastica at the 88:16 mark securing the 3-1 final score.

The Purple and Gold were outshot 19-3, including 14-2 on goal in the contest. On the defensive end of the field, Stenson and teammates fended off of 11 of the visiting team's offensive attacks.

Northwestern (6-6-1, 6-3-1 conference) will have a quick day of rest before a non-conference game versus the Jamestown College Jimmies of North Dakota on Monday, taking place at Reynolds Field. A 4 p.m. start time is slated for Monday's matchup.
