Women's Soccer extends win streak to five after 2-0 victory at Martin Luther

Box Score NEW ULM, Minn. -- The Northwestern College women's soccer team earned its fifth straight victory on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 win over Martin Luther College.  The "W" gives the Eagles a 3-0 start in UMAC play.

Lindsay Halvorson (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) scored Northwestern's first goal of the game, taking a pass from Rebekah Kirby (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) to put the Eagles up 1-0 in the 38th minute. Shortly after NWC returned to the field after halftime, Sarah Scinto (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) (Rosemount, MInn./Rosemount) added a goal, the second of her young college career, at the 46:56 mark to give the Purple and Gold an insurance policy. Scinto's fellow Rosemount High School alumnus Samm Ellingson (Apple Valley, Minn./Rosemount) (Apple Valley, Minn./Rosemount) was credited with an assist on the goal.

Northwestern owned possession of the ball throughout most of the game, as evidenced by their 36-7 advantage in shots in the 90-minute contest.  The Eagles also held the upper hand in a 5-2 count of corner kicks.

Tara Hanson (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) worked all 90 minutes in goal for NWC to earn the shutout victory while tallying four saves.

The Eagles, now 5-3 overall, will return to the practice field on Monday to prepare for their biggest game of the season to date, as Northwestern hosts the College of St. Scholastica at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 30. After the Saints won the 2010 UMAC regular season championship, NWC beat St. Scholastica 1-0 at the UMAC Tournament Championship in Duluth last November to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
