MANKATO, Minn. – Rebekah Kirby (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) inched closer to Northwestern College's all-time career goals record on Thursday night, scoring both of the Eagles' goals in a 2-1 victory over Bethany Lutheran College. Kirby is now nine goals away from overtaking Kyrie Jorgenson (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah)'s career goals mark of 61.
Kirby's first goal of the game, which was assisted by Jessica Monson (Albertville, Minn./Home School) (Albertville, Minn./Homeschool) came at the 13:30 mark. Neither team scored again in the first half, giving Northwestern a 1-0 halftime lead. Kirby extended that margin in the 62nd minute, taking advantage of a Bethany penalty on a Maggie LaPlante (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) shot in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Kirby's successful kick proved to be the game-winner, as the Vikings' Joelle Pipal scored in the 82nd minute to bring her team within one goal before time expired.
Northwestern dominated in the shots category, owning a 26-11 advantage in shots and a 17-5 margin in shots on goal. The Eagles had six corner kicks, compared to two for the Vikings.
Having won four straight games, NWC improves to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in UMAC contests this season. The Eagles will return home for a day before traveling to New Ulm, Minn. on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game against Martin Luther College.
