St. Kate's earns one-goal victory over Eagles in 2010 debut

ST. PAUL -- The Northwestern College women's soccer team came a goal shy of winning their 2010 opener on Wednesday as the Eagles lost a 3-2 battle to St. Catherine University. Heidi Anderson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Walnut Ridge Academy) (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Walnut Ridge Academy) and Rebekah Kirby (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) scored goals for Northwestern in the game.

St. Kate's got on the board first, scoring in the ninth minute as Kelsey Moll put a shot past NWC's Tara Hanson (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian). Kaitlin Kramer pushed the Wildcats' lead to 2-0 not six minutes later, as Jamie Kelley earned her second assist of the game on St. Kate's score.

Northwestern answered at 31:42, when Anderson took a pass from Rebekah Carrizales (Anoka, Minn./PACT Charter School) (Anoka, Minn./PACT Charter) to put the Eagles on the board and send the game into halftime with a 2-1 score in favor of St. Catherine.

Kelsey Nistler scored the game-winner for St. Kate's in the 56th minute, giving the Wildcats a much-needed punch as Kirby brought Northwestern within a goal with her successful shot at 74:45. Lindsay Halverson (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) recorded her first assist of the season on the goal.

St. Kate's recorded 18 shots in the game compared to 10 for NWC. Hanson tallied eight saves for the Eagles, while the Wildcats' Chelsea Jones-Thoma finished the contest with seven saves.

Northwestern begins its 2010 campaign at 0-1, while the win starts St. Kate's' season off at 1-0. The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 7, when they face Augsburg College in Minneapolis. Tuesday's 7:30 p.m. game will be under the lights at Edor Nelson field.
