Box Score

ST. PAUL – The Northwestern College women's soccer team won its ninth straight UMAC contest on Friday with an 8-0 victory. The win gives the Eagles a season sweep over the LumberJills, who have struggled this season after taking second place in the conference standings a year ago.

Samm Ellingson (Apple Valley, Minn./Rosemount) (Apple Valley, MInn./Rosemount) got things started for NWC with an unassisted goal in the 31st minute of the game. Lauren Cleope (Manila, Philippines/Faith Academy) (Waterloo, Iowa/Faith Academy) put the Eagles up 2-0 at halftime after finding room between the pipes on a penalty kick at the 42:50 mark.

Northwestern opened up the flood gates in the second half as the Purple and Gold steadily scored goals between the 51st and 72nd minutes. Rebekah Kirby (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) came off the bench to score a goal assisted by Shannon Sopher (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) before Lindsay Halvorson (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) drove home an unassisted score less than two minutes later at the 53:09 point of the game.

After a brief hiatus in the game's scoring, Jenna Powers (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley), Halverson and Cleope teamed up to all score goals within four minutes beginning in the 69th minute to increase the Eagles' lead to 7-0. Powers then put the icing on the cake with her second goal of the game in the 87th minute as NWC coasted to an 8-0 victory.

Northwestern got 20 shots off in the game while holding their opponents from the north to no shots on the day.

With the victory, the Eagles improve to 11-7 overall and 11-2 in UMAC play. Saturday will be a big day for Northwestern, who will welcome the College of St. Scholastica to Reynolds Field for a 2 p.m. game. Regardless of Saturday's outcome, NWC will host a team to be determined for the first round of the conference tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m.
