Kirby starts and finishes as Eagles top Vikings

MANKATO, Minn. – Rebekah Kirby (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial)'s (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) goal with under two minutes to go in regulation boosted Northwestern College to a 3-2 victory over Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday. Kirby's score, her seventh of the week, extended the Eagles' winning streak to seven.

Kirby started the game with a goal, getting NWC off on the right foot after the junior took a pass from Katy Hoppe (Amery, Wis./Amery) (Amery, Wis./Amery) in the fourth minute. Courtney Davis (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Abraham Lincoln) (Council Bluffs, Iowa/Abraham Lincoln) boosted the Eagles' lead to 2-0, scoring with an assist from Heidi Anderson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Walnut Ridge Academy) (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Walnut Ridge Academy) at the 43:54 mark.

Joelle Pipal put the Vikings on the board 13 minutes after halftime, scoring on a penalty kick. In the 75th minute, Bethany Lutheran's Paige Taylor evened the score with a shot that went past Northwestern's Tara Hanson (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) (Andover, Minn./Andover). Kirby's second goal of the game came at the right time, as the Eagles escaped with a 3-2 win.

Northwestern more than doubled Bethany Lutheran in the shots category, 18-7, while the Eagles posted six corner kicks to the Vikings' one.

Now 7-6 overall and 7-2 in UMAC action, Northwestern will continue its schedule on Tuesday, Oct. 19 with a nonconference game at Hamline University. That contest is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. in St. Paul.
