Kirby, Jorgenson record hat tricks in 9-1 win over Martin Luther

Box Score

NEW ULM, Minn. -- Outshooting their opponents 34-10, Northwestern College went on a scoring spree in a 9-1 victory over Martin Luther College. The Eagles scored six first half goals and have outscored their opposition 16-1 in NWC's last two games.

Rebekah Kirby (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial), one of Northwestern's players to score at least one goal in Tuesday's 7-0 win over Crown College, posted a hat trick in Friday's victory. Kyrie Jorgensen (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah) matched her teammates goal total for the 90-minute contest to record a hat trick of her own.

Kirby scored the first goal of the game in the 14th minute after taking a pass from Heidi Anderson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Walnut Ridge Academy) (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Walnut Ridge Academy). Anderson then followed with a goal of her own two minutes later after the ball deflected off of a defender. Following suit with the time, Jorgenson continued the onslaught with two goals in the next seven minutes to give Northwestern a 4-0 lead.

Martin Luther's Bethany Schultz was credited with her team's only score of the game after her shot from outside of the box sailed over the Eagles' Tara Hanson (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) (Andover, Minn./Andover) at 23:25. Northwestern's scoring then continued as Kirby scored back-to-back goals to close out the first half with the Eagles holding a 6-1 halftime advantage.

Jorgenson got in on the action again in the game's 68th minute, scoring an unassisted goal before Lindsay Halverson (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) found the back of the net with a goal in the 75th minute. Lauren Cleope (Manila, Philippines/Faith Academy) (Waterloo, Iowa/Faith Academy) wrapped up the scoring with a score at the 87:24 mark to account for the 9-1 final score.

The Eagles had seven corner kicks in the game while Martin Luther answered with one. Kirby's three goals brought her season total to 10, while Jorgenson's three offerings improved her season's statistics to nine goals and 19 points.

Northwestern, now an even 6-6 overall on the season, is 6-2 in the UMAC standings, which is good for second place behind the College of St. Scholsatica. The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Mankato, Minn. to face Bethany Lutheran College. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
