Seviola's Free Kick Does It In OT vs. Crown

Box Score

St. Paul, Minn., Oct. 16, 2007
– On a sloppy and wet day at Reynolds Field, the Northwestern College women's soccer team rallied in overtime to defeat Crown College by a score of 5-4. The Eagles had a wide 3-1 margin at the half, but allowed the Storm to score three unanswered goals, sending the contest into extra minutes. Nikki Seviola (Circle Pines, MN/Centennial High School)'s (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) goal on a direct kick was the difference maker, giving her team the golden-goal victory.

Northwestern came out of the box hot, as Kyrie Jorgenson (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah) (Decorah, Iowa/Decorah) scored the Eagles' first two goals at 14:54 and 26:03 to go up 2-0. Crown's Karissa Wallace put a shot past NWC keeper Rebecca Miller (Milton, WI/Milton High School) (Milton, Wis./Milton) to bring Crown within one in the 43rd minute. Jorgenson wouldn't hear anything of it though, as the freshman phenom scored again 20 seconds later, sending the Eagles into the break with a 3-1 advantage.

Seviola increased Northwestern's lead to three with a goal on a free kick at 59:25, giving what fans thought would be enough breathing room to last the remaining minutes. Crown made a strong push throughout the final half-hour though, and tied the game on Courtney Dixon's unassisted score in the 83rd minute to save the end result until overtime.

Seviola got another chance for a free kick four minutes into the third period, and made the best of it with her second goal of the game, and more importantly, the game-winner.

Northwestern got 19 shots off on the day, compared to 16 for Crown. Each team recorded a corner kick in the contest.

Jorgenson's three goals move her into a tie for first place all-time for goals in a season at Northwestern, matching her with Cyri Johnson's mark of 19, set in 1999. Jorgenson passed Johnson's record of all-time points in a season in the game, taking over first place with 42 points and two regular season games left to play.

The Eagles, who currently stand in fourth place in the UMAC at 7-7-1 (7-4-1 UMAC), will take on the conference leader in St. Scholastica on Friday afternoon, followed by a game versus Northland on Saturday. Friday's game time at Reynolds Field is set for 3 p.m.
