DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Northwestern baseball team dropped its opener at the UMAC Tournament Thursday, as the third-seeded Eagles fell to No. 2 Bethany Lutheran, 10-4, at Wade Stadium.
UNW jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Vikings plated three runs in the bottom of the inning and never looked back, scoring three in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) doubled down the left field line to score
Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) and
Carter Michaelson (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) followed that up with an RBI infield single for UNW's second run of the first.
Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) singled in Morrell in the eighth and
Caleb Piersma (Pella, Iowa/Pella) delivered an RBI single in the ninth to generate UNW's final two runs.
Philip Wall (Juneau, AK./IDEA) (5-2) tossed the first 7.0 innings, surrendering seven earned runs on 11 hits. The freshman right-hander fanned five. Krahn led the offense with two hits.
