DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Northwestern baseball team (18-19) experienced the highest of highs and lowest of lows Friday on day two of the UMAC Tournament, as the Eagles were involved in a pair of walk-off games at Wade Stadium. Unfortunately, the Eagles came out on the wrong end of the second walk-off of the day, ending their season. UNW rallied in game one for a 10-9 win over UW-Superior (12-26) before Bethany Lutheran (21-10) scored twice in the bottom of the ninth in game two to top UNW, 2-1.
In game one, the Eagles found themselves trailing 9-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth, but thanks to a furious comeback, UNW scored a combined seven runs in the final two frames to eliminate the Yellow Jackets, 10-9.
Philip Wall (Juneau, AK./IDEA)'s two-run double sealed the deal after
Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) and
Eric Peterson (Coon Valley, Wis./Westby) both delivered RBI knocks. Ehnstrom and
Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) both racked up three hits apiece, while
Caleb Piersma (Pella, Iowa/Pella) and Wall both posted a pair of hits.
Carter Michaelson (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) (2-1) earned the win, pitching in relief of Ehnstrom. Michaelson surrendered just two hits in two innings of work, fanning a pair of UWS batters.
In a pitchers dual in game two, the Eagles scratched a run across in the top of the eighth thanks to a BLC wild pitch to give UNW a 1-0 lead. Riding
Quinton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls)'s excellent outing on the bump, UNW looked to be on its way to a shutout win, but the Vikings had other ideas, scoring twice in the bottom of the ninth to top Northwestern, 2-1.
Lindow (1-2) scattered just five hits, while striking out four.
Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) and
Carter Michaelson (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) tabbed UNW's two hits. The Eagles stranded 11 base runners.
