ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern women's basketball (14-12) team has earned a date with the top-seeded University of Wisonsin-Superior Yellowjackets after the Eagles defeated the College of St. Scholastica, 52-39, in the opening round of the UMAC playoffs Monday night inside the Ericksen Center.
Northwestern used a hot start to take a 14-7 lead after the first frame. After CSS outscored UNW 11-9 in the second quarter, the Eagles poured in 29 second-half points, while holding the Saints to 21 points in the final 20 minutes.
Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) and
Alex Peterson (St. Paul, Minn. /Como Park) both reached double figures, as Tumbleson netted 12 points and Peterson 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) grabbed nine boards, while Tumbleson pulled down eight rebounds.
UNW shot 40.9 percent from the floor and 71.4 percent (15-21) at the charity stripe.
