ST. BONIFACIOUS, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's and women's cross country teams opened its 2015 campaign Tuesday at Crown College, taking part in the Early Bird Triangular on a hot and humid late-summer day. The UNW women came out on top, running past Crown and North Central, while the men finished second to Macalester.

The Eagles had a pair of second-place finishers in
Alyssa Arends (Ackley, Iowa/AGWSR) and
Wil Maki (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing). Arends finished the 3K race in a time of 13:31, while Maki crossed the 5K finish line in 17:40.
Just behind Arends were
Vanessa Whyte (Medina, Minn./Orono),
Danica White (Maplewood, Minn./Concordia Academy),
Megan Reece (Slater, Iowa/Homeschool) and
Lisa Greenslade (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island ), who finished in the 3-6 spots, respectively.
In his first race,
Eric Melendez (Richfield, Minn./Eagle Ridge Academy) ran to impressive time of 18:05, which was good enough for fourth place. Jackson Petersen wasn't far behind, as the sophomore finished in 18:08 to secure a top-5 finish.
