Morris, Minn. – In a hard-fought battle, the University of Northwestern men's soccer team was eliminated in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference tournament as Minnesota Morris won 2-0 Tuesday afternoon. With several players absent from the regular Eagle line-up, adjustments were made for today's game, but the Eagles were unable to capitalize offensively with few shots on goal, despite their five well-placed corner kicks.
Devin Chuba was the first to score, putting Minnesota Morris up 1-0 seven minutes into the game with his seventh goal of the season. Chuba made a header from inside the box off a crossbar rebound. John Hastings took the assist for the goal. With no other goals in the half, the Eagles went into the second period with a 1-0 deficit.
In high hopes of tying up the game, the Eagles came out fighting but struggled with placing the pass on offense. Although UNW held off the Cougars for most of the half, with 2:48 left in the game, Shingo Yamane made a break from the Eagle goal, with goalkeeper
Turner Main (Kewauee, Wis./Kewaunee) coming out of the box to attempt the save; however, Yamane dribbled around him, making an easy goal in an open net. Yamane's 10th goal of the season was assisted by Joshua Bartels. With time running out, the Maroon and Gold took the home field victory over the Purple and Gold.
Defensively,
Turner Main (Kewauee, Wis./Kewaunee) had one save for the Eagles of the three Cougar shots on goal. The freshman earned UMAC Defensive Player of the Week, because of his shutout last Saturday, which secured a place for the Eagles in post-season playoffs. On the flip side, Morris' Cody Christ had two saves for the day for Northwestern's two shots on goal. The Eagles were out-shot 10-4, but both teams had very few shots on goal.
Northwestern retired four seniors as they ended their season with a 7-12-2 overall record and 6-6-2 conference record. The Eagles have made playoffs every year but one since 2001; however were unable to execute past the semi-final round.
